Microplastics in the ocean are not only small pieces of plastic. They are mobile fragments, shaped by weathering, water movement, and the living systems they pass through. Once plastic reaches rivers, beaches, storm drains, or coastal waters, sunlight, abrasion, waves, and time can break larger items into particles smaller than about 5 millimeters. Other particles begin even smaller, including synthetic fibers shed from fabrics or tiny material released from human activity on land and at sea. The important shift is not only size. It is movement. A bottle cap, rope fiber, packaging fragment, or worn synthetic thread may begin as a visible object, but the ocean rarely leaves material in one place. Currents, tides, turbulence, and wind-driven surface motion can carry particles across water columns and coastlines. Some fragments float near the surface. Others mix downward, become coated with organic matter, or settle into sediment....
